Equity Cases

Through the project partnerships between University or University colleges and schools were established. Students take reasonability to prepare pupils for the access and working methods within academia. Both sides benefit of this partnership, as students learn to teach and take responsibility and pupils are provided on a very practical level the insight of academia but also in an emotional level might lose the fear of it.

The project targets the underrepresented groups in society in large which are for several different reasons not able to participate in academia. It aims to facilitate the access for pupils of these groups. The project relies mainly in financial grounds.

Emergency Fund for the payment of tuition fees is a project developed by the Student Union of the Law Faculty of Nova University of Lisbon. Targeted at students who do nothave financial resources for enrolling into higher education, this project ensures appropriate funding giving everyone a chance to study. The initiative is developed in cooperation between the student union and the institution, and supported by fundraising activities ensuring a budget for such funding.

Through a Legal Decree a social council has been established that provides subsidies and information and guidance on housing, finance and health information for all students of Haute Ecoles in French speaking Belgium.

The project “Support for students with disabilities” aims to enable disabled students to fully participate and enrol in academic activities. Therefore not only financial aid is
provided but also the smallest details (e.g. payment of gestures or typist hours) to lower the barriers are implemented. Remarkable is that also learning and psychiatric disabilities are taken into account.

Student Services at University Colleges in Flanders to strengthen the social character of university colleges and promote equal access and participation.

Tū Kahika is an award that supports young Māori students interested in a career in health, into and through the University of Otago’s Foundation Year health sciences course and beyond. Tū Kahika prepares students for further study in health sciences (particularly Health Sciences First Year) by providing wrap-around academic, cultural, pastoral and financial support over the year.

The Students Council of University of Latvia project nursery “LUstabiņa” aims to support current students with children and future students who faces obstacles to enter and stay in higher education because of raising child. Nursery works each work-day and provides students with possibility to leave their kids there while they are in lectures. Project is crucial for current students who cannot afford to pay for nursery and would most likely drop-out of university without this possibility.

A partnership between Canadian and Kenyan Universities and NGOS supports refugees in Dadaab, Kenya into gender equitable teacher training diplomas. The programme has ‘stacked’ discrete elements which result in internationally recognised qualifications which can contribute to a full degree.
